The award, which includes a $10,000 prize, was established to recognize a female, trans, or nonbinary early-career director who has demonstrated a unique vision in their work.
Barlow has been serving as the SDCF’s interim director since November.
The award from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation includes a $5,000 prize.
The residency will pair a BIPOC director or choreographer with an artistic director looking to make significant changes at their theatre.
Adam M. Kassim, Kholoud Sawaf, Blayze Teicher, and Sharifa Yasmin are this year’s virtual fellows.
The award given by the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation will be presented in a virtual ceremony this fall.
A portion of the fund will be designated for New York City-based members.
The two-time Tony Award-winning director will be honored at a gala in March 2020.
Hewett will start the position at the New York City organization in May.
