Lindsay Adams Wins the 2016 Judith Barlow Prize

Adams will receive a reading of her one act play inspired by a historic woman playwright.

A play based on his parents’ history has won the American Theatre Critics Association’s annual new play prize.

The program will support 18 playwrights at host theatres around the country.

The award recognizes one actor and one playwright for their body of work in the American theatre.

The recipients are Micki Grant, Jane Cox, Ari Laura Kreith, Lisa Kron, Jeanine Tesori, Lear deBessonet, and Elsa Rael.

The Chicago company slates works by Lynn Nottage, Jaclyn Backhaus, and Margaret Edson, as well as its first commissions.

Her play “Utility” will receive publication and a staged reading at Lincoln Center Theater’s Claire Tow Theater.

The award recognizes emerging playwrights who have not achieved national recognition.

The playwright will win the $50,000 prize for drama, presented by the Whiting Foundation.

Among the winners in the field of drama are Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Stephen Adly Guirgis, and Lynn Nottage, who will each receive $10,000 to $20,000.
