As part of a series of coast-to-coast readings to be held in November, the 6 winning plays will be presented at Kennedy Center’s Theater Lab.
The Chicago organization will offer 10 emerging theatremakers grants of $500 each.
Cohort members will train under the instruction of Jose Solís and other experts in the journalism field, and will have written a commissioned piece by the end of the program.
The company has also announced their inaugural Indigenous Voices of the Northeast Residency.
The retreat will feature readings of 3 new plays by playwrights Masha Obolensky, Melinda Lopez, and Catherine Epstein, and a community playwriting class taught by Lenelle Moïse.
The three writers will be honored at a gala in August.
96 high school nominees from 48 regional awards programs performed in the annual showcase, where a total of 20 awards and scholarships were presented to participants.
Kreimendahl will continue his ongoing residency through a Mellon Foundation grant.
Part of the Lorraine Hansberry Initiative to support women and nonbinary playwrights of color, the award comes with a $25,000 living-expenses stipend for each year of the fellows’ graduate studies.
