For TCG Members
Thank you for being a TCG member! For coverage consideration online and in print, we strongly encourage member theatres to enter their season listings. Our staff searches these listings for story ideas throughout the year. In addition, there are specific features that are reserved only for member theatres, including: Entrances & Exits news items, Know A Theatre, and On U.S. Stages. If you want to pitch a specific angle about a production, an individual profile, new initiative, or something else, please use the pitch submission form.
Please note that most awards, with few exceptions, will be included in the weekly Awards Roundup. In addition, we do not publish season announcements. Please enter season announcement details into the season listings section of your TCG online account.
For Contributors and Journalists
At American Theatre, we believe that the most important decision we make is whose stories we tell. Our editorial values are accountability, advocacy, creativity, diversity, excellence, innovation, mentorship, sensitivity, teamwork, and truth-telling. From small storefront operations to multi-million dollar resident companies, we aim to cover the full range of performance in the U.S. Who are the shining stars in your ZIP code? We want to know about them. Is there a new program or initiative at a theatre you love? Tell us about it! We’re interested in what’s new, now, and next.
That said, we also know that theatre does not operate in a vacuum and there may be times when stories need to be told about injustices. We publish those stories as well, because accountability makes us all better. Please note that we publish critical essays, but we do not publish show reviews.
Please submit pitches using the form. We discuss pitches in editorial meetings; if we do not get back to you within two weeks, feel free to pitch your story elsewhere. If you are submitting an article that you have already written, please submit it as a Word document or an editable OneDrive or Google document. We also ask that you include photos with captions and photographer credits with any piece that has already been written.
For writers As a non-profit publication, we try to be as competitive as possible with our rates. We pay $250 minimum and $1,200 maximum for most stories, depending on the word count, demand, and medium. If for some reason a story is reported and submitted, but is unable to be published, we offer a standard 50 percent kill fee. The acceptance of the kill fee means that you will not be able to take the story to a different online or print outlet for publication.
Playscript Submissions
One of the advantages of being a TCG member is that we publish a playscript in each issue of the print magazine, so that’s four new playscripts a year! The playscript selection process is a collaborative one, helmed by the TCG Books department. Please do not send unsolicited playscripts. Browse the 400+ plays published by TCG Books.
People to Watch
We are always collecting nominations for the online Role Call and in-print People To Watch features. Please submit nominations here.
