A data-driven look at subscriptions, and the glass-half-full look at some theatres that are beating the odds in a time of crisis.

Rosie Brownlow-Calkin.

Rosie Brownlow-Calkin (she/her) is an Equity actor and assistant professor of acting at the University of Nevada, Reno. She writes about the theatre economy for this magazine. In this issue, she explores the long-standing argument about the subscription model in “Subscriptions Are Dead. Long Live Subscriptions!” Says Calkin, “I kept reading these calamitous articles about subscription numbers, but I noticed they relied on anecdotal evidence to draw broad-stroke conclusions about the industry as a whole. I wanted to cast a wider net and take deeper, data-driven look at these trends. To my relief, the picture is a lot more complicated—and more hopeful—than other articles would have you think!”

Cara Joy David.

Cara Joy David (she/her) is a longtime theatre writer and an editor at Broadway World. For her piece “Survival Strategies”, she spoke to theatre leaders about how they have focused and/or expanded their programming to stay afloat. In her own words, “We have been overwhelmed with stories about everything that is going wrong in regional theatre. I’ve written those myself. While they conveyed a tale that needed to be told, they left many with the impression that our regionals were faltering across the board. That is not true. There are theatres all around the country finding a way to survive and, in some cases, thrive. Their stories need to be told too. Maybe a theatre executive reading this piece will learn a new strategy or think of things in a different light; maybe it will provide some hope to a theatre fan. We need to be motivated by the positive, not simply the negative.”
