RICHMOND, VA.: Firehouse Theatre has announced its 2015–16 season, including the regional premieres of two plays and a musical.
“Richmond is on the cusp of change,” said producing artistic director Joel Bassin, who took the helm of Firehouse last fall. “The world is in a state of perpetual change. Drama hinges on reversal and recognition—on something changing—and theatre aspires to transform us with new perspectives and insight. For these reasons and many others that we’ll explore this year, 2015–16 is indeed a season of radical change.”
The season begins with the regional premiere of The Boy in the Bathroom (starting July 15), with book and lyrics by Michael Lluberes, and music and additional lyrics by Joe Maloney. The musical is about a man with an obsessive-compulsive disorder who locks himself in the bathroom for a year to write his thesis in a controlled environment. Adam B. Ferguson will direct.
Next is the regional premiere of A.R. Gurney’s The Fourth Wall (staring Dec. 10), about a man who is upset with how his wife has rearranged the living room furniture, and the great lengths he will go to get the order of the room restored. Kerrigan Sullivan will direct.
The season closes with the regional premiere of Jordan Harrison’s Maple and Vine (starting March 31, 2016), about a yuppie couple who decide to pursue a more traditional lifestyle after being invited to join the Society for Dynamic Obsolescence. Mark Lerman will direct.
