American Theatre is proud to be the venue for Theatrical Mustang, an independently produced podcast from actor-writer-activist Woodzick. Each month they’ll bring listeners interviews with unbridled talent and cultural trailblazers from across the country.
This month they talk to writer and educator Seayoung Yim. Originally from Seattle and now based on the East Coast, Seayoung puts lessons from activism and writing into practice onstage and in the classroom. They discuss body myths, fairy tales, and brain-eating amoebas. Yim’s play Jar of Fat, a comedy that deals with fatphobia in an Asian American and Korean American context, was the 2022 winner of the Yale Drama Series Prize and second place winner of the Paul Stephen Lim Playwriting Award at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). Other honors include a Hedgebrook residency, a playwriting fellowship at Sewanee Writers’ Conference, a Stephen Sondheim Graduate Fellowship at Brown University, the People’s Choice Award for Outstanding New Play at Theatre Puget Sound’s Gregory Awards, Seattle’s Rose Lee Award for Excellence in Local Playwriting, and finalist in Playwrights Realm Scratchpad Series.
Seayoung’s work has been supported by Ma-Yi Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Seattle Public Theater’s Education Program, Theatre Battery, Pony World Theatre, Mirror Stage, Live Girls! Theater, University of Washington School of Drama, The 14/48 Projects, SIS Productions, and Theater Off Jackson. She recently completed her MFA in playwriting from Brown University, where she also taught undergraduate playwriting and screenwriting. Seayoung will teach playwriting at the Rhode Island School of Design in the Fall and her play, Jar of Fat, will be published by Yale University Press.
