A Spanish-language festival in New York and symposia on Ibsen and Shakespeare.

Nueva Wave

Festival Latino en Nueva York, a 10-day festival of Latin culture—music, film, literature and painting as well as contemporary popular theatre works—will be staged Aug. 10-20 at the Public Theater, the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park and other locations throughout New York City, under the sponsorship of Joseph Papp. This year’s festival is the fourth and most ambitious Latin cultural event Papp has presented.

Theatre groups on the wide-ranging program include Grupo de Teatro Argentino (Argentina), Teatro do Ornitorringo (Brazil), Teatre el Galpon (Uruguay), Teatro Alph (Chile), La Candelaria (Colombia), Cooperative Denuncia (Mexico), Els Joglars (Spain) and Teatre Pobre de America (Puerto Rico).

Hispanic groups from New York include the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre and Teatro 4, Inc. Other American troupes represented will be Teatro Gala from Washington, D.C. and Compania de Albuquerque of New Mexico.

Ibsen and Shakespeare will be the subjects of simultaneous scholarly meetings in August.

Chatham College in Pittsburgh will be the setting for the Second National Ibsen Symposium Aug. 9-11, co-sponsored by the college and the American Ibsen Theatre. Lectures, panels and an Ibsen film series will be featured, and participants will include such prominent scholars and critics as Eric Bentley, Rolf Fjelde and Richard Gilman. The New Jersey Shakespeare Festival’s Colloquium weekend, a three-day immersion into the world of Shakespeare, is slated Aug. 10-12 and is open to the public for a $5 per session fee, not including tickets to performances. The festival is mounting Othello and The Merchant of Venice, and lectures on these plays as well as fight demonstrations, costume shows and other events will be featured.
