Each month on The Subtext Brian speaks with a playwright about life, writing, and whatever itches we are scratching.

This month, Brian speaks with playwright and TV writer Eric Reyes Loo. Based in his hometown, Los Angeles, Reyes Loo has produced and developed work locally with theatres such as Pacific Resident Theatre, Rogue Machine, The Blank, Moving Arts, Chalk Rep, and other places around the country like The Inkwell, Lark Play Development Center, Manhattan Theatre Source, George Street Playhouse, and Rattlestick. He’s an alumnus of the Playwrights Union and is the Artistic Producing Director of Chalk Repertory Theatre where he also oversees the company’s new play development initiatives. Most recently, Eric was an Executive Story Editor on the series, A.J. AND THE QUEEN, currently on Netflix.

On this episode, Eric talks about experiencing a sort of identity crisis when not feeling seen for both his Chinese and Mexican ancestry and deciding to include Reyes in his name in order to feel culturally grounded. He discusses his journey through school, being seen by his family, and that elusive definition of success confessing “Success is that I am not alone.”
