BROOKLYN: Page 73 has named Marvin González De León the 2022 playwriting fellow, choosing him from among 10 semifinalists and three finalists. The organization, which develops and produces the work of early-career playwrights who have yet to receive a professional production in New York, has doubled the length its fellowship for the second year in a row, allowing 2021 playwriting fellow Bleu Beckford-Burrell to continue into a second year.
“We’re proud to advocate for Marvin’s artistry and career by naming him the 2022 fellow,” Page 73 artistic director Michael Walkup said in a statement. “We’re ardent fans of his writing and have been delighted by the breadth of styles and theatrical approaches he’s been experimenting with. He’s passionate about what he wants his plays to be and his body of work offers an expansive vision for staging Latinx stories within the American theatre.”
González De León will receive artistic and financial support to develop one or more new plays with an unrestricted award of $10,000 and a developmental budget of up to $10,000 for research, workshop and reading presentations, and fees for collaborating artists. Page 73 will produce at least one public presentation of the new play with artistic collaborators. Beckford-Burrell will receive an additional $10,000 award this year as well.
González De León writes plays that incorporate myriad genres, from sci-fi to horror, anchored in the traditions of Latin American literature. His work has been produced and developed at Teatro Bravo, Round House Theatre, Teatro del Pueblo, the Playwrights Realm, the Playwrights’ Center, and multiple universities. He is currently a Jerome fellow and a Core Writer at the Playwrights’ Center, where he was previously a McKnight and Many Voices fellow. González De León was a member of the 2020-21 Interstate 73 Writers Group at Page 73 and was a Virtual Realm mentee at the Playwrights Realm. An MFA recipient from Arizona State University, González De León teaches playwriting at Macalester College in St Paul, Minn.
Page 73 nurtures early-career playwrights to expand the theatrical canon and has consistently sought to open new pathways to recognition for fresh, urgent, and daring voices. Page 73 offers writers career guidance, financial assistance, and development opportunities through a variety of programs.
