MILL VALLEY, CALIF.: Marin Theatre Company has announced its 54th season, featuring six productions. The company will offer the initial programming digitally, and plans to produce live shows in 2021.
“Our team of artists have put in an enormous amount of dreaming, research and theorizing to create a season that launches with three thrilling productions in the digital and virtual realms,” said artistic director Jasson Minadakis in a statement. “I am so proud of the effort that everyone has made to think outside the box, inside the box, through the box and down the rabbit hole to create pieces with visionary formats that match their unique voices and stories. I’m also excited to see what our fourth production will be, a physical or digital manifestation of our new associate artistic director’s vision of theatre.” The theatre is also announcing that its final two productions will be live productions from the Boyer Theatre, hopefully with a combined live and virtual audience so folks who aren’t ready to come back to the theatre can still participate. “If conditions don’t permit live theatre in Fall of 2021, don’t worry,” added Minidakis. “We’re going to continue to commission new American work for the virtual realm so we can pivot to keep bringing you the best new American voices. Thank you for staying with us and for believing in our work and in the American playwright.”
The programming will begin with American Dreams (Nov.) by Leila Buck, a digital co-production with the Working Theater. The play is an interactive game show, in which the audience helps to decide who wins citizenship to the U.S. Tamilla Woodard will direct.
Next up will be the digital world premiere of Lauren Gunderson’s The Catastrophist (Jan./Feb. 2021), produced with Round House Theatre. The one-person play is about virologist Nathan Wolfe, the playwright’s husband, and his efforts to track and combat global outbreaks.
Following will be the digital world premiere of Denmo Ibrahim’s The Brilliant Mind of Yusef El Musri (April/May, 2021), which will stream in partnership with STORYKRAPHT. The play, starring Mattico David, is a live digital interactive experience that explores the immigrant psyche.
The season will continue with a yet to be announced production (June/July, 2021), which may be streamed or presented in person.
Next will be The Sound Inside (Sept./Oct., 2021), by Adam Rapp, about an an Ivy League professor who makes an unexpected request of a student.
The season will close out with the world premiere of Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley (Nov./Dec., 2021), by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon. This is the third installment of the Christmas at Pemberley trilogy, and follows Georgiana Darcy and Kitty Bennet. The play takes place two years after Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” novel ends.
Founded in 1966, Marin Theatre Company aims to produce intimate, powerful, and emotional theatrical works that engage audiences to discuss new ideas and adopt a broader world view.
