PORTLAND, ORE.: Portland Center Stage has named Chip Miller associate artistic director. Miller has served as the company’s associate producer since last spring, and steps into this new role immediately.
“Chip Miller is a visionary director and leader in the American theatre,” said artistic director Marissa Wolf in a statement. “I’m so thrilled that he’ll continue to shape the work on and off stage at PCS in this new role of associate artistic director.”
During his time at Portland Center Stage as associate producer, Miller directed Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Redwood, which he also helped to develop. Miller also held the role of associate/resident director at Kansas City Repertory Theatre for seven years, directing School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, Welcome to Fear City, Sex with Strangers, and A Raisin in the Sun. Other directing credits include the world premiere of Becoming Martin by Kevin Willmott at the Coterie Theatre, dwb: driving while black at Lawrence Arts Center, and 4:48 Psychosis at the Buffalo Room. Miller has developed work with playwrights including Kevin Willmott, Kara Lee Corthron, Brittany K. Allen, Catherine Trieschmann, Darren Canady, Andrew Rosendorf, Michelle T. Johnson, and Michael Finke. He has developed work at the William Inge Theater Festival, NYU Steinhardt’s New Plays for Young Audiences, Orlando Shakes’ Playfest, Midwest Dramatists Center, Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s OriginKC: New Works Festival, and Portland Center Stage at the Armory’s JAW Festival. Miller has a B.F.A. from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
“With Chip as our associate artistic director, I believe we have one of the most exciting artistic leadership teams in the country,” said managing director Cynthia Fuhrman in a statement. “When there are so many unknowns ahead as we navigate the pandemic and its impact on our field, having Marissa and Chip leading us forward artistically means we are equipped for the exact innovative and creative thinking we’ll need to thrive during this time, and beyond.”
