INDIANAPOLIS: Indiana Repertory Theatre has announced its 2020-21 season, featuring nine productions.
“We’re looking forward to our 49th season of producing nine plays across a diverse spectrum especially for our central Indiana audiences,” said artistic director Janet Allen in a statement. “These compelling stories encourage patrons of all ages to consider our shared history and celebrate and learn from our differences. We are particularly excited to continue our INclusion Series, to participate in Indianapolis’ Bicentennial observance, to produce a play focused on an iconic moment in American history by our playwright in residence, and to share with our audiences three remarkable pieces of theatre adapted from particularly timely, world-changing pieces of literature.”
The season will kick off with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (Sept. 9-Oct. 4), adapted by David Catlin, which invites audiences into the memorable gathering of literary giants as Mary Shelley writes the classic tale of Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creation.
Next up will be Indianapolis at 200: Finding Home (Oct. 6-Nov. 8, 2020), a celebration of Indianapolis featuring work created by a group of writers from across the city. The show will include songs by Hoosier singer-songwriter Tim Grimm and Indianapolis jazz icon Bill Myers.
Just in time for the holidays will be Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (Nov. 14-Dec. 26), adapted by Tom Haas, which fuses the classic tale with music.
Following will be Native Gardens (Jan. 13-Feb. 6, 2021), by Karen Zacarías, a comedy about a Latinx couple who clash with their new neighbors and their prize-worthy English garden.
The season will continue with The Cat in the Hat (Jan. 30-Feb. 28, 2021), adapted by Katie Mitchell. Based on the book by Dr. Seuss, the story chronicles a rainy afternoon that turns into an amazing adventure with the help of a mischievous cat wearing a striped hat.
Next will be Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 (Feb. 5-March 6, 2021), adapted by Tobias Andersen. Based on the 1953 novel, the play is set in a dystopian future where the written word is forbidden and firemen are paid to burn books instead of fight fires.
The season will continue with Thurgood (March 2-28, 2021), by George Stevens, Jr., about the civil rights lawyer and his efforts to secure equal education opportunities with the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case.
Following will be James Still’s The Widow Lincoln (March 31-April 25, 2021), about Mary Lincoln’s experience as the First Lady and her grief after her husband’s assassination.
The season will close out with Steel Magnolias, (April 13-May 9, 2021), by Robert Harling , about six Louisiana women celebrating the joys and tears of small twown life from the chairs of a beauty salon.
