BROOKLYN: The Civilians has announced the members of its 2019-20 R&D Group, comprised of writers, composers, and directors in the process of creating new works. The program, now in its 10th year, grants artists a season-long development residency culminating with a public presentation of works-in-progress.
“We are thrilled to welcome these dynamic storytellers who are investigating vital questions that shape our society today,” said R&D program director Meghan McClain in a statement. “The R&D Group provides a unique space for creative experimentation within a community, and we look forward to supporting the works as they develop.”
This season’s R&D Group includes Gabriel “Gaby” Alter, Michael Alvarez, Matt Barbot, Kathleen Capdesuñer, Rachel Dickstein, Kate Douglas, Darrel Alejandro Holnes, Grace McLean, Whitney Mosery, Crystal Skillman, and Jason Tseng.
Works in development include Drown My Book by Barbot; Candidate X by Dickstein with Kamala Sankaram and Aisha Zia; Against Women & Music! by Douglas and McLean; Afrikan•isch by Holnes; This Show Is Money by Skillman and Alter; and Sanctuary by Tseng. Alvarez, Capdesuñer, and Mosery will serve as directors.

Founded in 2001, the Civilians make new works at the intersection of the theatrical and the real. Their work has been produced at major New York and regional theatres.
