CREEDE, COLO.: Creede Repertory Theatre’s Headwaters New Play Festival will take place Aug. 23-24. Now in its eigth season, the festival is a week-long workshop at which chosen plays are e developed by professional theatre artists and receive public readings. 

This year, CRT received more than 250 submissions, and awarded two slots to North Star by Georgette Kelly and Into Place by Skye Robinson Hillis. 

North Star centers on an all-female group of campers and counselors, tackling themes of gun violence and questioning the trust of adults in their lives. Their stories are coupled with those of the French-Canadian myth of La Chasse-Galerie, a tale of voyagers making a deal with the devil in order to see their lost loved ones.  

Into Place follows Frank Wheelan, a man stuck in the monotony of small-town Indiana. He begins to see life in a new way when his childhood crush returns to town with her ailing son and he grapples with emotions and motivations he does not understand. 

A selection from 2018’s festival, Hazardous Materials by Beth Kander, will receive a world premiere production in the Ruth Humphreys Brown Theatre running Aug. 16-Sept. 13.

Also included in the festival will be the premiere of a Young Audience Outreach Tour show. YAOT’s mission is to bring high-quality musical theatre to rural and underserved communities, and has reached more than 36,000 students. This year’s production will be Best Foot Forward, with a book and lyrics by Lojo Simon, music by Brandon Scott Grayson, and directed by Melissa Firlit. This original bilingual musical will expose students to a variety of dance and musical styles.
