RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIF.: MainStreet Theatre Company has announced its 2019-20 season, featuring one musical and two plays.
“I’m so excited to announce our 14th season,” said artistic producer Mireya Hepner in a statement. “We always aim to tell a variety of stories for different ages, full of ideas that will resonate with young people and their families. Each of our shows next season is unique, but they share one common theme: that even under adverse circumstances, people have the capacity for hope. I’m thrilled to be sharing these wonderful pieces with our audiences.”
The season will open with the West Coast premiere of OLIVÉRio: A Brazilian Twist (Oct. 12-27), book and lyrics by Karen Zacarías, and music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. The musical retelling of Oliver Twist follows an orphan girl in modern day Rio de Janeiro. Robert Castro will direct, Richard Miller will music direct, and Tamica Washington-Miller will choreograph.
Following will be James Still’s And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank (Feb. 1-9, 2020). Recommended for ages 11 and up, the multimedia play tells Frank’s story based on accounts from Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss. Abigail Deser will direct.
Concluding the season will be The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (April 25-May 9), adapted for stage by Dwayne Hartford from Kate DiCamillo, about the life of a lost toy rabbit. Marya Mazor will direct.
