PITTSFIELD, MASS.: Barrington Stage Company has announced their 25th season featuring Sondheim, new works, and four world premieres.
The season at the Boyd-Quinson mainstage will kick off with Into the Woods (June 22-July 13), by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The Tony-winning musical tells the tale of a Baker and his wife reversing a curse and the classic fairy tale characters they encounter along the way. Darren R. Cohen and Joe Calarco will direct.
Next up is Gertrude and Claudius by Mark St. Germain (July 21-Aug 3), a prequel to Hamlet based on John Updike’s novel. Julianne Boyd will direct.
Following is Fall Springs (Aug 14-31), by Niko Tsakalakos and Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, a new musical about a small town with big dreams after the realization of fracking opportunities. Stephen Brackett will direct.
American Underground (Oct. 6-20), by Brent Askari, will conclude the season at the Boyd-Quinson stage. The contemporary thriller is about a young Muslim woman who appears on an interracial couple’s doorstep seeking passage through a new Underground Railroad. Julianne Boyd will direct.
The St. Germain stage will open with Hold These Truths (May 25-June 8), by Jeanne Sakata. It’s about unacclaimed hero Gordon Hirabayashi, who refused to expose a relocation group containing thousands of Japanese families which eventually leads him to a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
After that is AMERICA V. 2.1: THE SAD DEMISE & EVENTUAL EXTINCTION OF THE AMERICAN NEGRO (June 20-30), by Stacey Rose, about a troupe of Black actors who reenact the altered history of the American Negro and realize the startling similarities they draw to their own lives.
Next up is Time Flies and other Comedies (July 10-27), by David Ives, a collection of hilarious short plays.
If I Forget (Aug 4-31), by Steven Levenson will follow. Jewish-American siblings reunite to celebrate their father’s 75th birthday as secrets and fights fail to lay dormant. Jennifer Chambers will direct.
The season will also include the 2019 Youth Theatre production of Ragtag Theatre’s Hansel and Gretel (July 28-Aug 10) by Sam LaFrage and Lewis Flinn. The original Hansel and Gretel is reimagined and told by a troupe of poor “Italian” actors.
Barrington Stage Company, founded in 1995, strives to develop new material and bring new and young audiences to the theatre.
