LA JOLLA, CALIF.: La Jolla Playhouse has announced four productions in its 2019-20 season. Two more  productions will be announced at a later date.

“The 2019-20 season showcases four riveting new pieces that represent a multitude of vibrant and vigorous voices, all of which examine—in vastly different ways—how ordinary people attempt to persevere under extraordinary circumstances,” said artistic drector Christopher Ashley in a statement.

The season will contain the following productions:

The world premiere of Put Your House in Order by Ike Holter. The play, a combination of a romantic comedy and an old-school thriller, takes place in an upscale Chicago suburb, which starts to exhibit signs that something is terribly wrong. Lili-Anne Brown will direct.

The world premiere of The Luckiest by Melissa Ross. It is about a young woman whose world is shattered by a sudden diagnosis. Jaime Castañeda will direct.

The musical Kiss My Aztec!, by John Leguizamo, Tony Taccone, Benjamin Velez, and David Kamp. The satire takes place during the 16th century, as Spain is trying to colonize Mesoamerica and the Aztecs are fighting back. Tony Taccone will direct. The musical will first play at Berkeley Repertory Theatre before moving down the coast to La Jolla.

Cambodian Rock Band by Lauren Yee, featuring songs by Dengue Fever. It is about a young woman who is trying to find out more about her father, who had escaped the Khmer Rouge 30 years prior. Chay Yew will direct.

La Jolla Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer. In its history, the Playhouse has mounted 98 world premieres, and sent 32 productions to Broadway—among them the currently-running hit musicals Come From Away and SUMMER: The Donna Summer Musical.
