Twice a month on the Token Theatre Friends video series and podcast, theatre critics (and theatre besties) Jose Solís and Diep Tran bring a POC perspective to the performing arts.
Last season Jose and Diep saw an Off-Broadway musical they both loved, Miss You Like Hell, about a mother and daughter who go on a cross-country road trip. The mother was played by Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent) and the daughter was played by Gizel Jimenez (Avenue Q). In Miss You Like Hell, by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Erin McKeown, they laughed, cried, and craved tamales. This month the cast album for the musical is coming out (on Ghostlight Records), so the Friends sat down with Rubin-Vega and Jimenez to reflect on soul tribes and the importance of starring in a musical where Latinas are the leads.

Bernhardt/Hamlet by Theresa Rebeck, currently playing on Broadway, about that time the great actor Sarah Bernhardt decided to play Hamlet. (Through Nov. 11, $59-$159, with $25 tickets for the under 35 set.)
The Revolving Cycles Truly and Steadily Roll’d by Jonathan Payne, about a black teen named Karma who goes looking for her missing foster brother. (Through Oct. 6 at the Playwrights Realm, $45-$67.)
Antigone in Ferguson, a contemporary adaptation of the Sophocles classic, with original, gospel-inspired music, running at Harlem Stage (and coproduced with Theater of War Productions). (Through Oct. 13, FREE!)
