DENVER: The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) has announced that its Off-Center series will be accepting proposals for a new artist residency program, which will be called Powered by Off-Center.
The residency will give Colorado-based artists the opportunity yo have new works staged at DCPA, and will provide the artists with pre-production support, access to DCPA’s equipment and stock scenery, props, costumes, one week of technical rehearsals with a full staff in DCPA’s Jones Theatre, and funding of up to $5,000.
“We are excited to offer the local artistic community a new space to play and a platform to experiment,” said Off-Center curator Charlie Miller in a statement. “Our goal is to power your creative ideas, giving you the opportunity and resources to try something new. We hope this investment in the local artistic community can help inspire new ideas, build new creative partnerships, and support Colorado’s vibrant artistic ecosystem.
DCPA invites Colorado artists of all disciplines to submit proposals for live theatrical performances that they are interested in developing. These performances can come from any range of art forms and artistic experiences, but must have some kind of narrative thread and should be able to culminate in a live showing with an audience.
Off-Center is DCPA’s unconventional line of programming that is known for creating unexpected experiences like Michael John LaChiusa’s The Wild Party as a 360-degree party and Sweet & Lucky, Denver’s first ever large-scale immersive show. Works of theatre in this series focus on human connection and upending expectations, and aim to break tradition.
This is Off-Center’s second open call for submissions. Off-Center previously received 213 short play submissions for Bite Size: An Evening of Micro Theatre. Five selected works will be presented as part of that event by DCPA at BookBar this fall.
Powered by Off-Center will have two residency periods. The first residency will take place March 26-31, 2019, and the second residency will take place April 9-14, 2019.
