NEW YORK CITY: Classic Stage Company has announced its 2018-19 season, its 51st.
“The greatest gift of the classical repertoire is the opportunity to work on theatre pieces of enduring relevance,” said artistic director John Doyle in a statement. “This coming season, I hope, reflects the world we live in today.”
The season will open with The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Brecht (beginning late October), translated by George Tabori. Doyle will direct Brecht’s satire of Adolf Hitler and totalitarianism.
Beginning in early January 2019, CSC will present two August Strindberg plays in repertory: Miss Julie, about a noblewoman who calls for a footman, and The Dance of Death, about a retired married couple and their hatred of each other.
The season will close in 2019 with Marc Blitzstein’s folk opera The Cradle Will Rock, about a steel mill laborer who tries to unionize his fellow workers.
In addition, in summer 2019, CSC, in partnership with Oregon Shakespeare Festival, will present 39 readings from Play on!, a project that will “translate” Shakespeare into contemporary English.
Classic Stage Company produces reimagined classics.
