SAN FRANCISCO: Custom Made Theatre Company has announced its 2018-19 season, featuring six productions.
“A lot of thought went into the lineup for 2018-19,” said artistic director Brian Katz in a statement. “Did we want to have a season of ‘greatest hits’ to bring back plays a new generation of fans missed? Did we want to do all new work? All classics? What would make our 20th season special?”
The season will start off with The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (Sept. 20-Oct. 20), by Edward Albee, about an architect’s secret relationship with a goat that destroys his relationship with his wife and son. Paul Stout will direct.
Next up will be In the Heights (Nov. 8-Dec. 15), with book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, about the members of a vibrant community in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Nikki Meñez will direct.
The season will continue with When We Were Young and Unafraid (Jan. 13-Feb. 9, 2019), by Sarah Treem, about a woman whose bed and breakfast becomes a place for victims of domestic violence seeking refuge. Tracy Ward will direct.
Next will be Bess Wohl’s American Hero (March 7-April 6, 2019), a dark comedy about three sandwich artists working at a sub shop in a local mall who become unlikely allies. Allie Moss will direct.
Following will be Aaron Posner’s Life Sucks (May 2-June 1, 2019). Inspired by Chekov’s Uncle Vanya, the play follows a group of former lovers, old friends, and estranged in-laws as they gather to grapple with life’s biggest questions. Katz will direct.
The season will conclude with Passion (June 20-July 27, 2019), with book by James Lapine and lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim, a one-act chamber opera about a handsome army captain stationed in 1863 Italy who is forced to re-evaluate his beliefs about love. Stuart Bousel will direct.
