BOSTON: Lyric Stage Company of Boston has announced its 2018-19 season, featuring seven productions.
“For 20 years, I have built theatrical relationships with the Boston-area artists who work on and off our stage,” said producing artistic director Spiro Veloudos in a statement. “Our 2018-19 season brims with stories about families and communities, created by friends old and new.”
The season will start with Kiss of the Spider Woman, with book by Terrence McNally, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Based on the novel by Manuel Puig, about cell mats in a Latin American prison who escape their realities by fantasizing about a mysterious movie star playing the role of the Spider Woman. Rachel Bertone will choreograph and direct.
Next up will be Jen Silverman’s The Roommate, about a recently divorced middle-aged woman in Iowa who takes in a wild roommate for extra cash. Veloudos will direct.
Following will be Dan Beaty’s Breath & Imagination, in collaboration with the Front Porch Arts Collective, a musical about Roland Hayes, the first world-renowned African-American classical vocalist. Maurice Emmanuel Parent will direct.
Next will be Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves, about the teammates of a girl’s indoor soccer team, and the challenges they face both on and off the field. A. Nora Long will direct.
The season will continue with The Little Foxes, by Lillian Hellman, a drama about a Southern family whose selfish pursuit of the American dream tears them apart. Scott Edmiston will direct.
Following will be Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a collaboration with Actors’ Shakespeare Project, about twins who are separated during a shipwreck and must fend for themselves in a strange land. Paula Plum will direct.
The season will conclude with Pacific Overtures, with book by John Weidman, and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, about the unlikely friendship that forms between a Japanese samurai and an Americanized fisherman as a result of a 1853 mission to open trade relations through gunboat diplomacy. Veloudos will direct.
Founded in 1997, the Lyric Stage Company of Boston produces plays and musicals in addition to its educational programming.
