SAN DIEGO, CALIF.: San Diego Repertory Theatre has announced its 2018-19 season, featuring six productions.
“Next season’s productions will cover a variety of topics, including LGBT issues, female empowerment, sexual consent, race, class and corporations versus unions—the same issues that make the headlines and shape our lives each day,” said artistic director Sam Woodhouse in a statement.
The season will kick off with Fun Home (Sept. 6-30), with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. The musical, based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, follows Alison as she dives into her past to explore her sexuality tand he secrets surrounding her relationship with her gay father. Woodhouse will direct.
Following will be Anna Ziegler’s Actually (Oct. 11-Nov. 4), which explores the charged topic of sexual consent as two college freshman try to remember the details of a night spent together. Jesca Prudencio will direct.
The season will continue with Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2 (Nov. 21-Dec. 16), a sequel to Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, which picks up 15 years later with the return of Nora Helmer. Woodhouse will direct.
Next up will be Julia Cho’s Aubergine (Jan. 24-Feb. 17), about a chef who uses the power of food to keep his ailing father alive. Todd Salovey will direct.
Following will be Hershey Felder, Beethoven (Feb. 21-March 24, 2019), written and performed by Hershey Felder, a story about the life and career of Beethoven as told through Dr. Gerhard von Breuning, the young boy who cared for the musician in his last years. Joel Zwick will direct.
The season will conclude with Sweat (April 18-May 12, 2019), by Lynn Nottage, about how the bond between a group of friends in Reading, Pennsylvania is shaken when layoffs hit the factory where they work. Woodhouse will direct.
