SAN DIEGO, CALIF.: Cygnet Theatre has announced its 2018-19 season, featuring 8 mainstage productions.
The season will start with Monty Python’s SPAMALOT (June 27-Aug. 5), with book, music, and lyrics by Eric Idle, and music by John Du Prez. The musical parody follows King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. The cast will feature David Humphrey and Sean Murray, who will also direct. Terry O’Donnell will provide music direction.
Next up will be Every Brilliant Thing (Aug. 22-Sept. 16), by Duncan Macmillan and Johnny Donahoe, about a six-year-old boy who makes a list of everything worth living for to give to his mother struggling with depression. The cast will feature Ro Boddie, and Rob Lufty will direct.
Following will be Taylor Mac’s Hir (Oct. 3-28), a dark comedy about a veteran who returns home from Afghanistan to care for his ailing father, only to find that his newly transgender sibling has partnered with his mother to dismantle the patriarchy. Murray will direct.
Just in time for the holidays will be A Christmas Carol (Nov. 28-Dec. 30), adapted by Murray with score by Billy Thompson, which sets the classic holiday tale to original music, puppetry, and live sound effects. Patrick Marion will music direct, and Murray will direct.
Following will be George Brant’s Marie and Rosetta (Jan. 16-Feb. 17, 2019), a play that features the music of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight. Lufty will direct.
Next up will be Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Part One: Millennium Approaches in rotating repertory with Part Two: Perestroika (March 6-April 20, 2019), which examines New Yorkers living in the midst of the 1980s AIDS crisis and the conservative Reagan administration. Murray will direct.
The last show (May 15-June 9, 2019) will be announced at a later date. Lufty will direct.
Founded in 2003, Cygnet Theatre produces contemporary plays and musicals at its home in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
