BERKELEY, CALIF.: California Shakespeare Theater has announced its 2018 season, which will feature a Don Quixote set in Texas by Octavio Solis, and a Shakespeare adaptation.
“We’ve created a concentrated subscription season filled with the epic and eventful work so many of our audiences crave—of scale and scope and audacious, uncompromising vision,” said Cal Shakes artistic director Eric Ting in a statement.
The season will kick off with Quixote (June 13-July 1, 2018) by Octavio Solis and adapted from Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes. Don Quixote and his sidekick, Sancho are re-imagined in this play, which is set in a modern-day Texas border town and features music, villains, and epic battles.
Next up will be Everybody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (July 18-Aug. 5, 2018), which is based on the 16th-century morality play, Everyman. In this allegorical work, everybody dies and a universal truth is discovered through one actor’s journey to find companionship before death.
Cal Shakes’s season will conclude with The War of the Roses by Shakespeare (Aug. 22-Sept. 9, 2018). The play is adapted from the Henry VI trilogy and Richard III and depicts two families, the Lancasters and the Yorks, in their lengthy and challenging fight for English rule.
Cal Shakes is currently in its 43rd season and is committed to bringing classical theatre to many different communities within the Bay Area.
