TUCSON, ARIZ.: Borderlands Theater has announced its 2017-18 season, featuring five productions.
The season will begin with Robert Schenkkan’s Building the Wall (Sept. 27-Oct. 15), which takes place in the near future and the Trump administration has carried out his campaign promise to round up and detain millions of immigrants. The production is part of a National New Play Network rolling world premiere. Marc David Pinate will direct.
Just in time for the holidays will be A Tucson Pastorela (Dec. 14-17), by Milta Ortiz and the Ghosts Writers, a satirical retelling of the nativity story with political and pop culture influences. Pinate will direct.
The season will continue with Latin Standards (Feb. 15-18, 2018), written and performed by Marga Gomez, about an adult child of a Cuban entertainer who launches a hipster comedy night at a Latino drag club in San Francisco. David Schweizer will direct.
Next up will be The Mermaid Hour (March 15-April 1, 2018), by David Valdes Greenwood, about parents struggling to navigate how to parent their impulsive tween daughter.
The programming will also include Barrio Stories in Barrio Anita (April 18-21, 2018), by Pinate, which will be a walking tour through theatrical installations in Barrio Anita.
Borderlands Theater, founded in 1986, produces plays, develops new work, and partners with regional civic organizations to promote diversity onstage and in the audience.
