LOS ANGELES: Geffen Playhouse has announced its 2017-18 season, which will feature eight productions.
“In their own ways, each of these stories asks questions about whom and how we love,” said artistic director Randall Arney in a statement. “In a time when the world seems laser-focused on that which divides us, what better way to examine the human condition than through the ties that bind?”
The season at the Gil Cates Theater will start with Halley Feiffer’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York City, about two people whose ailing mothers share a hospital room.
The Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater season will start with Neil LaBute’s The Way We Get By, a comedy about an unlikely pair who struggle to find common ground after a one-night stand.
Skeleton Crew, by Dominique Morisseau, will also be included in the season. The play is about a makeshift family of auto workers in Detroit amidst the 2008 recession.
The lineup will include Chasing Mem’ries: A Different Kind of Musical, by Joshua Ravetch, about a woman who is not ready to let go of the life she has loved and the love of her life. The production will feature music by Bill Cantos and Mari Falcone, Dave Grusin, Marvin Hamlisch, Michel Legrand and Johnny Mandel, and lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Tyne Daly and Robert Forster will star, and Ravetch will direct.
The programming will also include Sarah Jones’s Sell/Buy/Date, a one-woman show featuring more than a dozen characters examining gender roles and sex work.
Three additional productions will be announced at a later date.
Founded in 1995, Geffen Playhouse produces classic plays, contemporary new works, and second productions.
