WASHINGTON, D.C.: Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) has announced its 2017-18 season, including two one-act plays by Pinter.
“In a time when the definitions of truth and fact have become controversial, Pinter feels like a powerful reflection of our current anxieties,” said artistic director Michael Kahn in a statement. “I have always been fascinated by the way these two early works pair with each other and with what they say about the mysterious nature of desire and identity. Pinter is quite simply a master and I look forward to being in his world again.”
The season will begin with a double bill of one-act plays by Pinter: The Collection, about a jealous husband who confronts a man he believes his wife is having an affair with, and The Lover, about a couple who plans for their infidelity. Kahn will direct.
Next up will be Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, about a young woman who is shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria and assumes the disguise of a page boy. Ethan McSweeny will direct.
The season will continue with Shakespeare’s Hamlet, directed by Kahn.
Following will be Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, presented by Irish theatre company Druid. Garry Hynes will direct.
Next will be Camelot, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, about the legend of King Arthur and the struggle for civilization and goodness in a world accustomed to violence and hate. Alan Paul will direct.
The last show of the season, yet to be announced, will be a D.C. premiere.
Also part of the programming will be STC’s “Free For All” performance of Shakespeare’s Othello, offering two weeks of free performances. Ron Daniels will direct.
Founded in 1992, Shakespeare Theatre Company produces classic plays and musicals.
