COLUMBIA, MD.: Rep Stage has announced its 2016–17 season, which will feature a world premiere musical, two regional premieres, and Jane Martin’s most recent play.
Kicking off the lineup will be The Other Place by Sharr White, helmed by co-producing artistic director, Joseph W. Ritsch (Sept. 7–25). The piece is about a neurologist whose health and personal life appear to be falling part, but then a mystery unfolds that ultimately reveals the truth about her.
Up next will be Bess Wohl’s American Hero, staged by co-producing artistic director Suzanne Beal (Nov. 2–20). The play depicts three workers at a sandwich shop as they pursue the American dream.
Following will be Jane Martin’s 2013 H20, directed by Kasi Campbell (Feb. 15–March 5, 2017). The comedic drama follows a young man’s rapid rise to Hollywood fame and his relationship with his evangelical Christian costar, while the two of them are in a Broadway production of Hamlet.
Closing out the crop of shows will be the world premiere musical Dorian’s Closet, with book and lyrics by Richard Mailman and music by Ryan Haase (April 26–May 14). Ritsch will direct. The piece is a fictionalized account of female impersonator Dorian Corey’s life and, after her death in the early 1990s, what leads to the discovery of a mummified body in the closet of her Harlem apartment.
Rep Stage, the professional regional theatre in residence at Howard Community College, was established in 1993.
