CINCINNATI, OHIO: Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) has announced its 2016–17 season, featuring six productions, including new plays from Matthew Lopez, Kimber Lee, and Sarah Treem.
The season will begin with The Legend of Georgia McBride (Sept 6–25), by Matthew Lopez, about an out-of-work Elvis impersonator who takes up a job in a drag act to pay the bills for his growing family.
Next up will be Kimber Lee’s brownsville song (b-side for tray)(Oct. 11–30), about a young African-American man in Brooklyn who loses his life to a senseless act of violence, and his family who ponders what his future might have been.
In time for the holidays will be the world premiere of Cinderella: After Ever After (Nov. 30–Dec. 30), with book by Joseph McDonough, lyrics by David Kisor, and music by Fitz Patton, about Cinderella and her life with the prince after she escapes the wrath of her evil stepmother.
The season will continue with the regional premiere of First Date (Jan. 17–Feb. 5, 2017), with book by Austin Winsberg, and music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, about a blind date newbie and a serial-dater who attempt to turn their disaster dinner date into something special before the check arrives.
Next up will be the regional premiere of When We Were Young and Unafraid (Feb. 12–March 12, 2017), by Sarah Treem, about an underground women’s shelter for victims of domestic abuse in the early 1970s.
The season will finish with the regional premiere of Steven Dietz’s Bloomsday (April 4–23, 2017). Inspired by James Joyce’s novel Ulysses, the play follows an American man who searches for the Irish woman who captured his heart 30 years ago.
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, founded in 1986, is committed to producing new works and bringing economically disadvantaged children to the theatre through its many educational outreach programs.
