Every other week, the editors of American Theatre curate a free-ranging discussion about the lively arts in our Offscript podcast.
It’s the all in-house edition of Offscript! New editor-in-chief Rob Weinert-Kendt, with editors Suzy Evans and Diep Tran, talk to AT‘s outgoing editor-in-chief/founder Jim O’Quinn. Jim has been covering the national theatre scene for a long time (for more than 30 years!) and he’s seen some things. We talk to him about how the field has changed in 30 years, his favorite AT stories, and how he got the job.
This week’s recommendations:
- Jim went to China and he recommends the Beijing Opera at the David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center (Sept. 2–3). Check out Jim’s interview with Chinese opera star Zhang Huoding in AT‘s September issue.
- Rob went to Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where he tried to not inhale wildfire smoke. While there, he saw Lynn Nottage’s newest play Sweat, which plays OSF through Oct. 31, and then at Arena Stage (Jan. 15–Feb. 21, 2016).
- Threesome by Yussef El Guindi at 59E59 in New York City (in a production from Portland Center Stage and A Contemporary Theatre).
- Youtube videos from the #Ham4Ham show, where Lin-Manuel Miranda and his Hamilton cohorts entertain audiences at the Hamilton lottery.
