NEW YORK CITY: The Play Company (PlayCo) has announced its 2015—16 season, featuring indie-rock band Sky-Pony, playwright Christopher Chen, and a work-in-process presentation of a Haruki Murakami short story.
The season begins in November with the U.S. premiere of Abyss, written and translated by Maria Milisavljevic (Nov. 7–Dec. 6). This thriller, about a group of friends who discover threatening secrets when they set out to find their missing friend, will be directed by Maria Mileaf. The play was performed at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre earlier this year.
Then Play Company will partner with Ripe Time to present a work-in-progress stage version of Haruki Murakami’s Sleep, adapted by playwright Naomi Iizuka (Feb. 26–28, 2016). The play follows an insomniac Japanese housewife whose sleeplessness opens her up to a haunting and beautiful world. Ripe Time artistic director Rachel Dickstein will helm the physical theatre work.
Next will be the world premiere of Sky-Pony (Feb.—March, 2016), a coproduction with Ars Nova, with text by the husband-and-wife team of Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Worsham and music by Jarrow. Worsham, a Tony nominee for her performance in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, and Jarrow are part of the rock band Sky-Pony, and the band’s cheeky, high-energy music will be featured in the show. Sam Buntrock will direct.
Following will be the New York premiere of Christopher Chen’s Caught (May 2016), an exploration of cultural identity and artistic freedom through the work of a fictional Chinese dissident artist. Eric Ting will direct. The play premiered at InterAct Theatre in Philadelphia in 2014.
