ARLINGTON, Va.: Synetic Theater has announced multiple projects and professional development opportunities to benefit freelance arts workers. The five projects will provide relief to 32 artists, totaling $60,000.
“I have been thinking a lot about the word ‘opportunity.’ In Georgia, we call it საშუალება, sashualeba, possibility,” said founding artistic director Paata Tsikurishvili in a statement. “We’ve been spending the past few months looking for ways to support and challenge our artists in the new year.” Added managing director Jason Najjoum in a statement, “With these grants and projects, our intention is to address the loss of expected income suffered by the community of theatremakers who have made Synetic a vibrant arts organization over the last 20 years.”
The socially distanced projects span film, theatre, movement, and outreach programs, including smARTies “art-in-a-box,” which will provide arts enrichment to underserved youth in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
The relief grants are funded by Virginia’s Rebuild VA Grant Program and by Amazon, which is building a corporate headquarters in Arlington County.
Founded in 2001, Synetic Theater is a center for American physical theatre, combining drama, movement, acrobatics, dance, and original music in their productions.
