ATLANTA: Serenbe Playhouse has announced its 2020 season of six productions, including a new work for family audiences. Serenbe has also announced that founding executive artistic director Brian Clowdus will step down from his role, but will remain on as a member of the company’s board of directors.
Serenbe’s season will begin with Spring Awakening (March 18-April 12, 2020) with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik. Based on the Frank Wedekind play, the rock musical follows a group of adolescents in late 19th century Germany.
Next up will be a premiere of an immersive adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (May 4-Aug. 30, 2020), adapted from Lewis Carroll. The production will bring the scenery of Wonderland to Serenbe’s outdoor playing space.
The season will continue with Steel Magnolias (May 20-June 14, 2020) by Robert Harling, a story of six women facing life’s challenges together in Louisiana.
Following will be Kinky Boots (July 8-Aug. 9, 2020) adapted by Harvey Fierstein with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. Serenbe will offer the regional premiere of the musical in a new outdoor production.
The season will also include Serenbe’s annual production of The Sleepy Hollow Experience (Sept. 23-Nov. 1, 2020), as well as a holiday show to be announced at a later date.
Founded by Clowdus in 2009, Serenbe Playhouse is a professional theatre committed to producing site-specific performances and programs that connect art, nature, and the community.
