NEW YORK CITY: The Mayor’s Office has launched the NYC Civics and Arts Fund, which as part of its mission will subsidize theatre tickets for the city’s students. The first production to participate in the new initiative will be What the Constitution Means to Me on Broadway.
“Growing up, I was fortunate to be able to attend live theatre and it changed my life,” said Constitution playwright and performer Heidi Schreck in a statement. “It gave me an understanding of the world beyond my small town upbringing and brought me so much joy. I am deeply honored to partner with the Mayor’s Fund to hopefully pass on some of that joy by making live theatre more accessible to young people today.” The play is running on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theatre through Aug. 24 (and just announced a national tour to kick off January 2020).
The Civics and Arts Fund, launched by the Mayor’s Fund in partnership with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and DemocracyNYC, will sponsor opportunities for 500 New York City youths to experience art and performances that promote civics learning, thinking, and engagement. The fund will work with museums and performance producers partners. Other participants in the fund have not been announced.
