New York Theatre Workshop to Stage New Mfoniso Udofia Plays

The 2019-20 season will also feature ‘Sing Street,’ a new musical from creators of ‘Once,’ and a new play by Martyna Majok.

NEW YORK CITY:  New York Theatre Workshop has announced three productions for its 2019-20 season. Two additional productions will be announced at a later date.

The season will start with Mfoniso Udofia’s runboyrun & IN OLD AGE, another pairing from her nine-part saga The Ufot Cycle. The play runboyrun follows a married couple who have been living the same day over and over again until the dam breaks and time rushes in. IN OLD AGE is about a woman who travels to the future and learns the true nature of love. Loretta Greco and Awoye Timpo will co-direct the plays, which will be presented together as one evening of theatre.

Next up will be Sing Street, with book by Enda Walsh and music and lyrics by John Carney and Gary Clark. Based on the film written and directed by Carney (who also created Once), the musical is about a teenager in Dublin in 1985 who turns to music to escape troubles at home and to impress a girl. Sonya Tayeh will choreograph, and Rebecca Taichman will direct.

Following will be Martyna Majok’s Sanctuary City, a story about lifelong friends negotiating the promise of safety while fighting for a place in America. Rebecca Frecknall will direct.

Founded in 1979, New York Theatre Workshop is committed to developing and producing new plays and giving artists platforms to develop their work through workshops, readings, and full productions.
