WASHINGTON, D.C.: Studio Theatre has announced the latest group of playwrights and directors selected for Studio R&D, a program created in 2012 with the goal of supporting new works from inception to first production. The commissioned artists will create aesthetically diverse new works to be produced in future seasons with full support from Studio Theatre.
Among the playwrights selected for the program is James Fritz, known for his plays Ross & Rachel and the award-winning Parliament Square. Also featured in this group is playwright James Ijames, a founding member of Orbiter 3, Philadelphia’s first playwright producing collective. Steph Del Rosso, another of the commissioned playwrights, has had work developed or produced by Soho Rep, New York Stage and Film, the Lark, and others. Rounding out the group of playwrights is Emily Schwend, whose plays include The Other Thing and the award-winning Utility.
Incoming directors for the program includes Carl Cofield, who also serves as associate artistic director for the Classical Theatre of Harlem. Lila Neugebauer, another director selected for the program, recently made her Broadway debut with The Waverly Gallery. Eric Ruffin is another of the commissioned directors; his Off-Broadway work includes Gutta Beautiful at the New Federal Theatre, and The Bear at HERE Arts Center.
Studio Theatre produces contemporary drama in purposefully intimate spaces. By taking inspiration from great ensembles, Studio Theatre aims to bring thoughtfulness, charisma, and daring to its works.
