SAN FRANCISCO: Theatre Bay Area (TBA) has announced that playwright Ofra Daniel and the Jewish Circle Theatre have been selected as the recipients of the 2018 Will Glickman Award for Daniel’s Love Sick. Jewish Circle Theatre produced the world premiere of the musical, in association with John Gertz Productions, at Osher Studio in Berkeley, Calif. The awards will be presented at the 2018 Annual Conference on April 30 at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, Calif.
“I am thrilled to present this year’s Glickman Award to Ofra Daniel and Jewish Circle Theatre,” said executive director Brad Erickson in a statement. “To have the Glickman go to an artist and company that have been in the Bay Area for less than a decade is a real testament to the wealth of talent in our theatre community.”
Established in 1984, the Will Glickman Award honors a playwright and a producing company for a production of a play. The awards have been administered by Theatre Bay Area since 2004, and the winners are selected by a panel of Bay Area theatre critics.
Daniel moved to the United States from Israel with her family nine years ago. She founded Jewish Circle Theatre to build bridges between Israeli and Jewish cultures. She serves as both the company’s artistic director and executive director, and her plays include Edges, Kassit in Tel-Aviv, What If?, and Secrets Behind Closed Doors.
Love Sick, inspired by ancient erotic poems in the Old Testament, follows a young woman in a passionless marriage who discovers that she has an unseen admirer. The music was co-written with Lior Ben-Hur. The musical will appear next at Mountain View Center for Performing Arts in Mountain View, Calif., Feb 23-March 19.
