MINNEAPOLIS: The Playwrights’ Center, a new-play development hub, has announced that Robert Chelimsky will join the organization as its new managing director on May 1. He recently served as managing director of Epic Theatre Ensemble in New York.
“I’m so excited to join [artistic director] Jeremy Cohen and the board to lead the Playwrights’ Center into its next great act,” said Chelimsky in a statement. “I’ve been fortunate to work with organizations supporting new and diverse voices in the American theatre—from professional playwrights to students learning activism through theatre.”
Chelimsky served for six years at Epic Theatre Center, where he executive produced world premieres by Godfrey L. Simmons Jr. and Nilaja Sun, and commissioned works by Dominique Morisseau, Heather Raffo, Keith Josef Adkins, and Ken Urban. He also oversaw the development of the Epic NEXT youth development program, which paired young artists with mentors.
“His arrival ensures that the Playwrights’ Center’s ongoing commitment to new and innovative theatremaking that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable is indeed in exceptional hands,” said board chair Stephen H. Strand in a statement.
