CENTER VALLEY, PA.: Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (PSF) has announced its 2017 summer season, featuring five mainstage productions and two shows for children.
“This season charts a course through five locales and five different centuries, creating one grand adventure for our artists and our patrons,” said producing artistic director Patrick Mulcahy in a statement.
The season will begin with Evita (June 14-July 2, 2017), featuring book and lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, about the life of Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. Associate artistic director Dennis Razze will direct.
Next up will be The Hound of the Baskervilles (June 21-July 16, 2017), adapted by Steve Canny and John Nicholson from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, about the legend of a diabolical hound haunting generations of a family in England.
Following will be The Three Musketeers (July 20-Aug. 6, 2017), adapted by Ken Ludwig from Alexander Dumas, a swashbuckling comedy about heroism and honor.
Running in repertory will be Shakespeare’s As You Like It (July 20-Aug.6).
Next will be Erin Sheffield’s Shakespeare for Kids (July 26- Aug. 5).
Following will be Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida (July 26-Aug. 5), a tragic love story set amid the Trojan War. The production will be PSF’s sixth “Extreme Shakespeare” production, in which the actors arrive to rehearsal with their lines learned and rehearse as Shakespeare’s company would have. The actors will also make artistic decisions, since the positions of directors and designers did not exist in Shakespeare’s time.
The season will conclude with Brandon E. McLauren’s new children’s play The Ice Princess (June 2- Aug. 5).
Founded in 1992, the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival produces Shakespeare, and classic and contemporary plays and musicals.
