DENVER: The Theatre Company at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts has announced four playwrights who will receive readings at the 2016 Colorado New Play Summit: José Cruz González, Lauren Gunderson, Tira Palmquist, and Mat Smart. The festival will take place over two weekends, Feb. 13–14 and 19–20, 2016.
The plays are:
- A.M. by González, about two women who want to start an all-female mariachi band.
- Book of Will by Gunderson, about the creation of Shakespeare’s First Folio.
- Two Degrees by Palmquist, about the inner life of a scientist who is invited to present in Washington, D.C., about climate change.
- Midwinter by Smart, a love story set in Antarctica during the winter.
In addition, Theresa Rebeck’s newest play, The Nest, and Tanya Saracho’s Fade, both of which had readings at the 2015 New Play Summit, will receive their world premieres at the Denver Center and play during the festival. The Nest will run Jan. 22–Feb. 21 and Fade will run Feb. 5–March 13.
Since its inception in 2005, the New Play Summit has introduced 44 new plays, more than half of which have gone onto productions at the Theatre Company. Recent world premieres includes Matthew Lopez’s The Legend of Georgia McBride, Samuel D. Hunter’s The Whale, Eric Schmiedl’s adaptation of Kent Haruf’s Benediction, Catherine Trieschmann’s The Most Deserving, Marcus Gardley’s black odyssey, Karen Zacarias’s Just Like Us, Jeffrey Haddow and Neal Hampton’s Sense and Sensibility The Musical, and Dick Scanlan’s reimagined version of The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
