NEW YORK CITY: Classic Stage Company has named John Doyle as its new artistic director. He will succeed Brian Kulick, who will continue to direct independent projects at the theatre and teach at Columbia University.
Doyle is a Scottish theatre director known for his minimalist and pared-down revivals of classic musicals. Doyle has served as the associate director of CSC for the past two years. At CSC, Doyle directed Passion, Allegro, and will direct Peter Gynt this season. He won a Tony Award in for his direction of a revival of Sweeney Todd in 2006, and he also directed The Visit, A Catered Affair, and a revival of Company on Broadway. He will direct a revival of The Color Purple, set to open in December on Broadway.
