NEW YORK CITY: The recipients of the 2015 Theatre World Awards were announced on May 5, recognizing six actresses and six actors for their debuts in a Broadway or Off-Broadway show.
Two of the recipients were for Off-Broadway performances at notable New York nonprofit houses: Daveed Diggs, who played the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton, which recently wrapped up its twice-extended run Public Theater and will move uptown to the Richard Rodgers Theatre this summer. The other Off-Broadway winner was Benjamin Scheuer, whose one-man play with music The Lion recently played at Manhattan Theatre Club and at the Lynn Redgrave Theater (and is currently on a tour of the nation’s resident theatres).
In addition to the debut awards, the committee also named the recipients of honorary awards: Chita Rivera, who’ll recieve the John Willis Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, and Leanne Cope, winning the 7th Annual Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence for her performance as Lise in An American in Paris.
Peter Filichia will host 71st Annual Theatre World Awards ceremony, which will take place June 1 at the Lyric Theatre in New York City.
