Matt Chapuran has been name the new managing director of the Lyric Stage Company of Boston, the board of directors announced on Thursday.
Chapuran comes to Lyric Stage from another Boston outfit, Huntington Theatre Company, where he was in charge of institutional giving. He spent five years at Stoneham Theatre, most recently as managing director, and he was also the managing director of the Nora Theatre Company. Chapuran has also performed with ImprovBoston, where he is currently directing the musical comedy The Gruesome Tale of Penny Dreadful.
“Matt will be a welcome addition to the team here at the Lyric Stage,” says the company’s artistic director, Spiro Veloudos. “His background as a performer and director will complement his managerial style, and will fit right in with our current staff.” Veloudos and Chapuran previously worked together on negotiating the New England Area Theatre contract with Actors’ Equity Association, and Chapuran was vice president of the Producers Association of New England Area Theatres when Veloudos was president.
“Much of Boston’s theatrical renaissance can be tied directly to Spiro Veloudos’s arrival at the Lyric Stage and its subsequent commitment to local artists,” says Chapuran. “It’s a beloved space where I first interned in 1994. I’m honored to have this unique opportunity to contribute to its mission.”
