KANSAS CITY, MO.: A Jew, a Christian and an atheist walk into a theatre. That’s not the set-up for a joke—it describes an ideal audience for Paul Mesner Puppets’ holiday offerings. That’s because the puppet theatre will be presenting three different holiday shows, one Christian in its theme, one Jewish and the other secular.
First up is The Nativity, presented Dec. 5–7 at the Grace and Holy Cathedral in downtown Kansas City, where more than 40 puppeteers, actors, singers, magicians and oversized puppets recreate the birth of Christ. The secular show is Old MacDonald’s Holiday Hoedown (Dec. 10–14), following the farmer as his animals prepare for Christmas. Finally, the Jewish-themed play Hershel & the Hanukkah Goblins (Dec. 19–21) follows a traveler who rids a village of pesky sprites determined to ruin Hanukkah. And in a move showing that there’s nothing wrong with mixing holidays, Victor Raider-Wexler, who’s playing Hershel, is also the voice of God in Nativity. Happy holidays!
